Community Projects in the Mathare Valley Slum of Nairobi
Those who have electricity in the slum are in the minority. Most people use fire lamps or try to make use of the floodlighting that exists in some areas.
“Flying toilets” are an ever-present risk for those who walk in Mathare at night. Rather than leave their homes to go to the toilet after dark (itself a risky activity), people defecate into plastic bags and throw them out of their front doors. Hence the name “flying toilet”.
