Community Projects in the Mathare Valley Slum of Nairobi

These people are searching through the ashes from a fire the previous day in which their homes were destroyed. They are scouring for salvageable items such as nails and iron sheets. Unfortunately most houses were built around wooden frames.
Houses in the slum are built very close together, meaning there is no space for the fire brigade to get to the site. People bring water from the river but sometimes it’s just not enough and they are forced to physically pull down the surrounding buildings to stop the spread of the blaze. Most fires start accidentally from unattended charcoal stoves or electrical faults. When gang violence flares up, arson is also commonplace.
